Introduction to K-MoonVeda Meditation
For thousands of years, sages and holy people have used meditation as a spiritual tool to promote calmness and relaxation, in addition to deepening the connection between the human mind and the Divine. Zen meditation, mantra meditation, mindfulness practices, energy work, visualizations, and chakra balancing are all highly beneficial forms of meditation which trigger the alpha wave patterns of the brain. Multiple years of Zen meditation leads to development of the theta wave patterns, which usually emerge prior to falling asleep, when the delta wave patterns take over. Transcendental Meditation, however, has had more peer reviewed studies in universities such as Johns Hopkins and Stanford than any other form of meditation.
My stepfather was trained in TM back in the 1960's. He and my mother taught me the basics of meditating to help me deal with chronic stomach upsets when I was 6 years old. By the way, children's brains are naturally in the alpha wave pattern until adulthood, at which time the stresses of daily living put the brain into the beta wave patterns, which is connected to the sympathetic nervous system, or fight or flight response. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was taught TM by his teacher in the same method used in India for 5,000 years and was kept secret to the public until the late 1950's, when his teacher received a message that it was time for his student to take this effortless form of meditation out into the world. He wrote "Art of Living, Science of Being - Introduction to Transcendental Meditation in ****, and it quickly became a bestseller. Spirituality and many forms of meditation became very popular in the 1960's, as many young people rose up in protest against the cruelties of the Vietnam War and the injustice of segregation. He also founded the Maharishi University of Management (now known as Maharishi International University) in the 1970's, and with the help of learned Vedic scholars, brought Ayurvedic Wellness and Integrative Medicine to the Western world.
There are many watered down versions of Ayurveda in the West today. At MIU, all Ayurvedic studies are centered around Transcendental Meditation, the daily practice of which is a requirement for all their students. I have my M.S. in Maharishi Ayurvedic Wellness and Integrative Medicine and also a year of Ayurveda and Aromatherapy graduate studies. Here I am putting together my very first introductory course in Ayurveda and Aromatherapy, beginning with this introduction to meditation, because of the profound connection between consciousness and matter.
I will include information on how to contact a certified Transcendental Meditation instructor and will be leading the class in ten-minute TM sessions at the beginning of our weekly Zoom class to facilitate deeper understanding and harmony. For the first class, I will lead a chakra balancing meditation which will also be available on video. I was professionally trained in 2018 and have found TM to be the most useful and effective form of meditation, although I do still enjoy other forms, especially visualizations.
Transcendental Meditation is an emerging field that delves into the profound connection between the mind, body, and spirit, fostering holistic healing and overall wellness. This integrative approach goes beyond conventional medical practices, emphasizing the balance and harmony necessary for true well-being. In an introductory lesson, students are introduced to the foundational concepts that define this innovative practice, exploring how mental, physical, and spiritual health are intertwined. By understanding these core principles in depth, individuals can begin to uncover new pathways to healing, personal growth, and a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them.
Understanding Transcendental Meditation
Transcendental Meditation is a holistic approach that integrates traditional medical practices with spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being. Unlike conventional treatments that primarily focus on addressing physical symptoms, transcendental medicine aims to treat the individual as a whole, recognizing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and soul. This practice is a great supplement to practices from ancient healing traditions, mindfulness techniques, and modern medical advancements to create a balanced path to wellness.
At its core, transcendental medicine emphasizes the importance of harmony between the internal and external aspects of one’s life. Techniques such as meditation, energy healing, herbal therapy, and even personalized nutrition plans are commonly used in conjunction with standard medical care. By fostering self-awareness and addressing root causes of illness—whether they stem from emotional stress, environmental factors, or physical imbalances—this approach empowers individuals to play an active role in their healing journey.
Incorporating transcendental medicine into your life doesn’t necessarily mean replacing conventional treatments. Instead, it enhances them, creating a complementary system that prioritizes long-term health and prevention. As the popularity of integrative medicine grows, transcendental practices continue to gain recognition for their ability to bridge the gap between physical health and inner peace. Ultimately, transcendental medicine invites us to explore deep self-connection and achieve a state of well-being that transcends the physical realm.
Formal instruction in TM must be given by a certified teacher who has spent at least five months of in-residence training at a TM training center where Ayurvedic practices include organic vegetarian meals, daily yoga and transcendental meditation, Pranayama yogic breathing, self-healing practices, aromatherapy, and other Ayurvedic studies. There are four classes, each lasts 2-3 hours. A unique mantra is whispered into the ear of the student by the teacher during the first class. This mantra, usually a one syllable word, is never spoken aloud. This secret mantra opens up the mind to the Unified Field, from which all of Creation emerges.
This practice leads to Unity Consciousness, God Consciousness, then Transcendental Consciousness, a perspective with access to Universal Knowledge at all times.
